Hoping to quell(平息；镇压) criticism, Meta has dropped the word “train” from its “streamlined”(精简的；简化的) commercial terms of service(服务条款) that kick in(生效；开始实施) on October 30.

Last week, Meta faced backlash(强烈反对；舆论反弹) after legal experts warned that the tech giant’s sweeping(全面的；广泛的) new commercial terms of service seemed to give Meta permission to endlessly scrape(抓取；爬取【网络术语】) websites linked on business pages.

Talking to Nieman Lab, experts suggested that Meta could possibly use the policy to avoid millions in licensing fees(许可费；授权费) from news organizations by requiring all business users to share a wealth of(大量的；丰富的) AI training data simply for running a business page.

A Meta spokesperson(发言人) confirmed that Meta did not alert users to(通知用户；提醒用户注意) the changed language following backlash. This potentially only adds to confusion ahead of the policy rollout(推出；发布【新政策/产品】).
