The federal government is expanding a safety investigation(安全调查) into a number of vehicles manufactured by General Motors after receiving hundreds of reports of brake failure(刹车失灵). The problem affects more than 1.1 million cars, including many of GM's electric vehicles(电动汽车), as well as ones it has built for Honda and Acura. The problem is with the brake-by-wire system(线控制动系统) (which GM calls eBoost), which can suffer a spindle fracture(主轴断裂) while driving. GM says that in the event of that happening(万一发生那种情况), the car should still retain(保留;保持) a number of critical safety features(关键安全功能)—antilock brakes(防抱死制动系统), traction control(牵引力控制系统), and stability control(车身稳定控制系统)—at least until it comes to a complete stop(完全停下来), at which point(届时;在那时) they become inoperable(失效;无法操作). But NHTSA's ODI(缺陷调查办公室) says that it has received many reports that contradict(反驳;与……矛盾) this behavior and allege(声称;指控) that eBoost failures are followed by an immediate loss of braking(制动功能立即丧失), which obviously poses a safety risk(构成安全风险). Indeed, NHTSA has received 227 incident reports(事故报告), a number that grows to 745 once you include the hundreds of occurrences(发生的事件;个案) reported to GM. Twenty-two cases resulted in crashes(导致碰撞事故), and while six people have been injured in five crashes, thankfully there have been no fatal incidents(致命事故).
