German physicist Max Planck was one of the pioneers(先驱;开拓者) of quantum mechanics(量子力学) in the early 20th century, earning the 1918 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery of quanta(量子;能量子) . There has never been a whisper of scandal(丝毫丑闻传闻;whisper of scandal 为习语,指极微弱的负面传闻) about the man's integrity(正直;诚信) or his scientific work. So a pair of science historians(科学史学家) were puzzled when they discovered that a scientific journal had inexplicably(无法解释地;莫名其妙地) retracted(撤回;撤稿) two of Planck's papers from the 1940s. The journal in question(当事期刊;涉事期刊) is Naturwissenschaften, now known as The Science of Nature. The journal typically adds a large RETRACTED notice(撤稿声明) across digital papers that have been retracted, leaving them available for download(可供下载). But it has removed the two Planck papers entirely, leaving just a blank page(空白页) (and empty PDFs) with a brief note saying the articles had been "withdrawn due to article violation(因文章违规被撤回)." Physics historian Yves Gingras of the University of Quebec in Montreal was browsing the blog Retraction Watch's(撤稿观察;一个监测学术撤稿的知名博客) list of Nobel Prize winners who have had scientific papers retracted, just out of curiosity(纯属好奇). Gingras was shocked to see Planck's name on the list, and enlisted(招募;请来) fellow historian Mahdi Khelfaoui, of the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivieres, to investigate why the two papers had been retracted. They outlined(概述;梳理) their findings in a preprint(预印本;未经同行评审的论文初稿) posted to the physics arXiv(物理预印本服务器;arXiv.org). Read full article Comments
